Hannah Kim

Hannah Kim was born in Portland, Oregon, raised in the Czech Republic, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Los Angeles county (Biola University), and is currently living and working in Portland, Oregon.

A common theme throughout her work is that of home - the search for it, the longing for it, the delight in it, the hope that the thirst for it will one day be quenched. A personal theme, as an expat, Hannah seeks to tune her work to a common note we can all resonate with.

Growing up in the heart of Europe, surrounded by art, architecture, and music, Hannah’s creativity was spurned from a young age. Her work echoes the places she has lived, from Czech cobblestones, to the golden light of California, to the moss-clothed trees of the Pacific North West. At times, she ventures into passages of color and shape, improvising as she would on the piano.

Fascinated by ideas of perspective, time, and space, Hannah has been exploring and developing her idea of dynamic perspective in her most recent paintings. Launching from observation, she aims to describe the experience of being in the space - recognizing peripheral vision, selective seeing, movement, and memory.

Her work is an optimistic attempt to practice sensitivity toward her everyday surroundings, recognizing and preserving the beauty of an embodied moment. She explores metaphors of color and shape, ideas of perception, visual musicality, embodied presentness.

She has exhibited her art nationally and internationally, from galleries to a pop-up trailer and river cruise boat. Her art is in private, government, and university collections. She has taught and directed art classes and camps in both the English and Czech language.

Some things I’ve been currently enjoying :

-Cozy evenings painting in the home studio, my husband reading nearby

-Exploring the city on foot, seeing the way people curate their spaces

-Gaining inspiration from fellow artists in Oregon
